Canada down but not out for Pan Am Qualifiers
September 3, 2018
The women's national team provided a thriller while the men had a rough day on matchday one of the 2019 Pan American Games qualifying matches from Auburn University in Alabama.
After eliminating the United States earlier this year to advance to the Pan American Handball Championships in Greenland, the Americans revamped by bringing in a new coach and called up new dual-citizen players with professional experience abroad and it paid off. Despite keeping it close for the first half Canada would get into foul trouble and missed on opportunities when the Americans went down a man a few times during the second and went down 36-24. It will be a difficult task for Alexis Bertrand's hard-working crew in the final leg but as they have showcased many times this year they are always up for the challenge.
The women's side right from the start went to-to-toe with the Americans, who came into the match as the most traveled international team in women's handball. Both teams battled back and forth and exchanged the lead numerous times throughout the contest. The Americans would prevail by a 22-20 score but the game could easily have swung in either direction. Needless to say the final match in Montreal should be another classic and with all tickets now soldout it will definitely be a great atmosphere.
