Canada defeats Puerto Rico in NORCA Opener

April 3, 2018

The Canadian senior men's national team defeated Puerto Rico 31-27 on Tuesday afternoon in their opening match at the North American and Caribbean Championships (NORCA) in Mexico City.

Led by head coach Alexis Bertrand, the squad battled hard throughout what was a very close match. Both teams were even 13-13 after the opening half before Canada turned up the offense in the second.

Quebec native Alexandre Touzel led the team in scoring with six goals in the match with Etienne Mercier netting five.

This tournament acts as a qualifier for the 2018 Men's Pan American Championship. The top three teams from the six team group stage will earn a spot into the competition which will be held in Greenland in June.

Canada looks to continue the momentum when they face Mexico on Wednesday at 7pm EST and then take on Cuba on Thursday at 5pm. The team returns to the court on Saturday at 5pm when they face the Dominican Republic with their final match set against the USA on Sunday at 1pm.
