European and World Champion Mayssa Pessoa visits Canada

September 30, 2017

It was a very special treat from a very special athlete this week as legendary Brazilian goalkeeper, Mayssa Pessoa, came to Canada to meet with handball athletes and share some of her spectacular experiences and tips.

She is the only player in history to have won world championships in both indoor and beach handball. She was also a key player for elite Romanian club CSM Bucharest in 2015-16 as they won their first ever European Champion's League in penalties over top Hungarian side Győri Audi ETO KC. The 33 year old sensation was also single goal away from winning remarkable back to back championships in this year's competition as she led Vardar to the final only to fall ever so short in OT.

She has 76 international caps with the Brazilian National Team and has won gold medals at the World Games (2005), two Pan American Championships (2013, 2015), including the most recent one in Toronto, and the 2013 World Championship in Serbia (2013).

She visited Team Ontario Handball and enjoyed a warm welcome from men's and women's players and was generous to give one of her national team jerseys from the 2016 Olympics to the team.
